Senior right-handers Anthony Trapuzzano (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Canevin Catholic) and Mark Miller (Convoy, Ohio / Crestview) combined for 10 shutout innings, leading The College of Wooster to a 2-0 win during the opener at Kenyon College on Easter Sunday, however, the Lords came back for a 9-6 victory in the nightcap, gaining the inside track for the No. 1 seed in the North Coast Athletic Conference East Division.

Kenyon, which swept Wooster 13-3 and 4-3 on Saturday, is now 11-1 in NCAC East games with a four-game series remaining next weekend, while the Fighting Scots end up 13-3 in the division for the 2009 season. Now, Wooster will look to rival Allegheny College (13-13, 5-5 NCAC East) for some help, when Allegheny hosts Kenyon April 18-19.

Sunday's first game was a pitcher's duel. Trapuzzano started and went the opening 6.2 innings, scattering just three hits and a couple of walks, before handing the ball over to Miller with runners on first and second in the bottom of the seventh. After a passed ball, Miller struck out the Lords' No. 9 hitter to quell the threat and extend the game into extra innings.

Neither squad mounted much of a threat in the eighth or ninth, but then in the 10th, the Scots finally lit up the scoreboard. Matthew Pierce (Oklahoma City, Okla. / Casady School) led off the frame with a single and stole second base. Shane Swearingen (Hilliard, Ohio / Bishop Watterson) then laid down a sacrifice bunt, during which an error was committed, allowing Pierce to score the contest's first run and Swearingen to get to third. A one-out John Warren (New Castle, Pa. / Union Area) base knock plated Swearingen for a two-run cushion.

Miller shut down Kenyon 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 10th to close out the victory. He gave up just one hit during 3.1 scoreless innings and improved to 6-0.

Game two featured a series of big innings. The Lords started the scoring with a three-run second, scoring all three after two outs had been recorded. Wooster responded in the top of the third, leading off with back-to-back-to-back hits – a Michael DeBord (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / Woodridge) triple, a Derek Wyman (Marysville, Ohio / Marysville) RBI single, and a Sean Karpen (Venetia, Pa. / Peters Twp.) RBI double. Karpen also scored, tying it 3-3.

The Scots took a 5-3 lead in the fifth, with DeBord kickstarting another rally. He had a leadoff single, followed by a Wyman walk, and a Karpen sacrifice bunt. Warren brought home DeBord via a sacrifice fly and then Stu Beath (St. Louis, Mo. / Avon Old Farms – Conn.) singled in Wyman.

Kenyon, though, answered with three runs in the bottom of that frame, featuring an RBI two-bagger by James Wendt, as well as three more in the sixth for a 9-5 lead.

Wooster rallied in the seventh, scoring once on a bases-loaded, two-out walk, but the Lords' Nate Fedor entered and notched the one-out save.

Geoff Bollier grabbed the win on the mound (3-2) after going the first six innings, while Miller took the loss (6-1) during another relief appearance.

Offensively, DeBord paced the Scots for the second day in a row, combining to go a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs and the triple to give him a 7-for-8 weekend at the plate. Karpen and Pierce had a hit in each game.
