CLEVELAND, Ohio – Playing in a Major League Baseball Stadium did not affect The College of Wooster's bats Thursday afternoon, as the Fighting Scots busted out for 13 runs over the first five innings en route to a 15-5 win over Case Western Reserve University at the Cleveland Indians' Progressive Field.

Wooster (26-7), which beat Case Western Reserve 6-1 in the teams' Progressive Field game last season, was led by Sean Karpen (Venetia, Pa. / Peters Twp.), who had a career-high five-hit day (5-for-6). His third base knock – a two-run homer over the 19-foot high wall in left field – marked the 200th hit of his career – just the 11th Fighting Scot to reach that milestone.

Karpen, Wooster's leadoff hitter, opened the game with a single through the left side. He did not end up scoring, however, the Scots would get two on the board in the first. Matt Groezinger (Columbus, Ohio / Upper Arlington) banged a one-out double high off the wall in left to plate one. Stu Beath (St. Louis, Mo. / Avon Old Farms – Conn.) came home with the second run, helping jar the catcher's glove out of his hand as Beath was safe despite the throw beating him during a sacrifice fly the ensuing at bat.

A two-out rally in the second created another tally for Wooster. A hit by pitch, followed by singles from Karpen and John Warren (New Castle, Pa. / Union Area) made it a 3-0 game.

Case Western Reserve (10-25) had a two-out rally of its own in the bottom of the second, as the Spartans poked three consecutive singles into right field for their initial run.

Two batters into the third, the Scots were ahead 5-1. Beath found a hole for a leadoff single and then Groezinger notched his second RBI double of the day, and during the play, the Spartans committed a two-base error, allowing the latter to score as well.

The bottom of the third saw Case Western Reserve battle back with three runs on four hits, highlighted by a Matt Richards two-bagger and a two-run single off the bat of Bobby Marko.

Wooster expanded on its 5-4 lead in the fourth inning, despite Karpen taking an out for the only time of the game. Warren singled again and Beath smashed a home run to right field, marking his second this spring and fifth of his career. Groezinger followed with a walk and he scored when Zack Vesco (Pickerington, Ohio / St. Charles Prep) delivered a single up the middle for an 8-4 cushion.

The Scots clinched the game via a five-run fifth. The first two runs that frame came via Karpen's hard shot to left, which cleared the fence by inches for his second homer this season and the 12th of his career. With the bases empty and two outs, Wooster tacked on three more, including RBI singles from Michael DeBord (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / Woodridge) and Shane Swearingen (Hilliard, Ohio / Bishop Watterson), who also recorded two pickoffs and a caught stealing from his catcher position.

Ahead 13-4 at that point, the Scots went on to a 10-run victory.

Wooster used eight pitchers on the day, with Tanner Hall (Oil City, Pa. / Oil City) getting credit for the win (2-1) after striking out two in a scoreless fifth – his lone inning of work.

In addition to Karpen's five hits, Beath reached safely in all four of his plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with a hit by pitch. Also getting to base four times was Groezinger, who went 2-for-3 with two walks, while Warren contributed a 3-for-6 performance as the starting shortstop.

The Scots will be back in action Sunday when they welcome Penn State Behrend (21-5) to Art Murray Field for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
