WOOSTER, Ohio – Senior right-hander Mark Miller (Convoy, Ohio / Crestview) tossed a no-hitter during the second game of The College of Wooster's 16-3 and 12-0 sweep of Oberlin College on Sunday as the two North Coast Athletic Conference East Division foes overcame adverse weather conditions at Art Murray Field to complete their season series.

Sunday's opener saw a pair of 30-plus minute delays due to hail first and rain later, before No. 7 ranked Wooster (19-3, 8-0 NCAC East) pulled away for the 13-run victory, and Miller then made quick work of Oberlin (7-15, 0-4 NCAC East). It marked the first no-hitter by a Fighting Scot pitcher since Jon Oliver notched the feat March 24, 2006, also coming against the Yeomen.

Miller, making just his third career start, yielded just two base runners – a walk in the third inning and an error in the fourth – while also striking out a career-high 11. The closest Oberlin came to a hit was in the seventh, when Ben Puterbaugh led off with a liner towards the second baseman. It appeared the ball might clear Derek Wyman's (Marysville, Ohio / Marysville) reach, however, he leapt, got his glove on it, and then caught it with his bare hand. Next, Jeremy Simon hit a sharp liner to right field, but it was right at Chris Wood (Lebanon, Ohio / Lebanon) for a routine out, and Miller finished it off himself by handling a come-backer to the mound off the bat of Patrick Bourke and then tossing it over to first base.

Wooster's offense provided plenty of run support for Miller. The Scots put up a four-spot in the bottom of the first after their first two batters had both struck out, as a walk, infield single, another single, and a three-run homer by Matthew Pierce (Oklahoma City, Okla. / Casady School) followed.

Wooster would tack on two in the second, three in the fourth, including a two-run base knock from Luke Sutton (Galion, Ohio / Galion), and three more in the fifth, keyed by a Stu Beath (St. Louis, Mo. / Avon Old Farms – Conn.) single that plated two.

Miller, who improved to 4-0 on the season and lowered his ERA to 1.19, has now pitched shutouts in two of his three career starts. He had been a standout closer for the team the last two years.

There were some anxious moments for Scot fans in game one, as the Yeomen took a 1-0 lead during the top of the fourth and their starting pitcher, Jack Dunn, appeared to be in a groove. In the bottom of that frame, though, Wooster earned back-to-back walks with one out, which were followed by back-to-back hit by pitches for one run, and then Sean Kapren (Venetia, Pa. / Peters Twp.) cleared the bases with a double to left-center. The Scots scored six runs in all before Dunn got out of the inning.

The two teams exchanged single tallies during the fifth to make it a 7-2 Wooster lead, and in the sixth, the Scots erased any hopes of an Oberlin comeback with nine runs, highlighted by a three-run homer to left-center, courtesy of John Warren (New Castle, Pa. / Union Area).

Wooster starter Anthony Trapuzzano (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Canevin Catholic) picked up the win, working 4.0-plus innings, during which he gave up two runs on four hits. He improved to 4-0 on the year as well.

At the plate, Beath led the Scots as he combined to go 6-for-8 with two doubles and seven RBI in the two games. Karpen had a pair of doubles as well while going 4-for-7 with three RBI, and also of note, Sutton was 4-for-7 with one double and two RBI.

Wooster, now on an eight-game win streak, is scheduled to host No. 14 ranked Marietta College (10-3) on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
