Scots Take Over First-Place in NCAC With Sweep of Oberlin

Matt Barnes fires in a pitch during game two of Wooster's 6-3, 5-1 sweep of Oberlin.

Greg Van Horn and Johnathan Ray hit home runs in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, of game one to lift The College of Wooster to a 6-3 win and then Matt Barnes threw a complete-game 5-1 victory, as the Fighting Scots earned a sweep of North Coast Athletic Conference foe Oberlin College Saturday afternoon at Art Murray Field in Wooster, Ohio.

The wins move Wooster, 14-9 overall, into first-place in the NCAC standings with an 8-2 league mark, slightly ahead of Wittenberg University (16-11, 6-2 NCAC), and the two rivals are set to play a twinbill Sunday.

Oberlin (10-12, 1-5 NCAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead through two innings Saturday, but the Fighting Scots answered with a three-run third to tie it. That frame started with back-to-back walks, followed by a Kyle Koski sacrifice bunt, and then Michael Wellstead drove them in with a double. Wellstead came around, moving to third on a balk and home via a sacrifice fly courtesy of Derek Wyman.

It remained 3-3 until Van Horn delivered a two-out solo shot to left field for his second dinger of the year.

Then, in the sixth, Ray gave Wooster the three-run cushion with a two-run bomb to left-center field, also marking his second homer this spring.

That was enough for Justin McDowell to earn his fifth win (5-1). One of the three runs that crossed was unearned, as he allowed six hits while striking out seven in 6.0 innings. After the leadoff hitter doubled in the seventh, Tyler Fugate closed out the Yeomen 1-2-3 for his sixth save.

In the nightcap, the Scots' offense struck early, plating three during the bottom of the first. Wellstead   led off with a single and Van Horn brought him in with a base knock up the middle, followed by a Zac Mathie RBI double and a Zack Vesco RBI groundout.

That alone was enough for Barnes, who went the distance. Oberlin only averted the shutout when Brandon Cantrill opened the seventh with a double that Mathie couldn't quite track down in left-center and Cantrill scored on a pair of wild pitches. Barnes only gave up five hits and struck out eight without a walk, while improving to 4-0 on the season.

Offensively, Van Horn was 3-for-5 (also reached base via a hit by pitch) with three RBI in the two games and Mathie picked up a three-hit day (3-for-6). Also collecting multiple base knocks were Wellstead (2-for-7), Craig Day (2-for-4 with three runs scored), and Vesco (2-for-5).

First pitch of the Wittenberg-Wooster series is set for 1 p.m.
