The College of Wooster constructed a 6-1 lead through six innings and then hung on for a 6-5 win at Washington & Jefferson College Wednesday in non-league action.

After falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the second, Wooster (16-10) responded with two runs during the third and then put up a four-spot on the scoreboard an inning later. Craig Day opened the third with a single, Michael Wellstead added a one-out walk, and they moved to second and third base on a wild pitch. Derek Wyman tied it up with an RBI groundout and Greg Van Horn followed with a two-out single up the middle to plate Wellstead for a 2-1 lead.

The Fighting Scots gained some separation during the fourth, thanks in large part to some small ball. Zack Vesco started it with an infield single, and after a walk, Michael DeBord bunted them over to second and third with his seventh sacrifice of the season. Day followed with an infield single, bringing Vesco home, and Zach Jergan found an opening through the right side for another RBI single. Wyman would also add an RBI base knock before the inning was through, making it a five-run cushion for the visitors.

Although Washington & Jefferson would have a late comeback bid, that was enough offense for Zach Washinski to earn his first collegiate win (1-1). The freshman went the first five innings, only yielding the one run on two hits, and he struck out four.

The Presidents would strike for four in the bottom of the seventh, keyed by a Wooster error as three of the runs were unearned. Justin McDowell faced the minimum during the eighth and Matt Barnes notched the save in the ninth, with the only threat being a one-out single but the runner was stranded at first.

Wyman paced the Scots' lineup by going 2-for-5 with the two RBI, and Vesco (2-for-5) and Day (2-for-3) also recorded two hits apiece.

Wooster is slated to return to action on Friday at Baldwin-Wallace College (14-11).
