Barnes Becomes Wooster’s Strikeout King, But Scots Swept

Matt Barnes
Matt Barnes struck out 10 Heidelberg batters Wednesday, raising his career total to a school-record 270.

WOOSTER, Ohio – Matt Barnes became The College of Wooster's career strikeout leader during game one Wednesday afternoon, but the Fighting Scots were unable to hang on to a 7-2 lead when the senior right-hander departed during the seventh and they ultimately lost to Heidelberg University 12-11 in 10 innings. The 'Berg went on to the sweep at Art Murray Field, taking the nightcap 8-4.

Barnes struck out two in each of the first three innings, then the side in the fifth, and his 10th and final strikeout of the game closed the top of the sixth inning. That elevated his total to 270, breaking a Wooster record held by Russ Crawford (269, 1977-79) for more than 30 years.

The Scots (20-16) gave the pitching staff a 7-0 lead through three innings. They scored four in the bottom of the first, despite just one ball leaving the infield, that being a Billy Farrow RBI single past the second baseman. In the second, Zac Mathie delivered a run-scoring triple off the wall in right-center, and in the third, Farrow cleared the fence in left for a solo home run and Michael Wellstead plated Craig Day, who had been hit by a pitch, with a single through the left side.

Barnes was solid through six innings, yielding just two unearned runs in the sixth, but his pitch count reached 124, so after giving up a sharp hit to start the seventh, Wooster went to the bullpen. The Scots made it through the seventh without giving up a run and padded their lead when Day drove in a run with a single to make it 8-2.

Heidelberg (30-8) came alive, though, in the eighth. By the time the frame was through, the 'Berg had scored eight runs on seven hits off four different pitchers, capped by Gar Keen's two-out grand slam to right field, suddenly putting the visitors up 10-8.

Wooster came right back with two runs against Andy Lowe, the NCAA Div. III all-time saves leader. Wellstead started the rally with a one-out single up the middle and then Derek Wyman doubled into left. Greg Van Horn loaded the bases with a hit by pitch and Mathie followed by dropping a game-tying single down the right-field line. Lowe escaped further trouble with an inning-ending double play.

Zach Klein stranded the bases loaded during the top of the ninth, but the Scots' offense was also held scoreless to extend the game into extra innings.

With one out in the top of the 10th, Jason Lash and Alex Monroe placed nearly identical doubles into right-center on back-to-back pitches, with Monroe's scoring Lash. Monroe would also come around for a key insurance run on a Derek Andrzejcak base knock.

Wooster attempted to rally once more, scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the 10th but it left the tying run on second base as Lowe closed out the game. Lowe improved to 4-1, while Klein took the loss (0-1).

Game two started out as a pitcher's duel between two former high school teammates – Sylvester Nino for Heidelberg and the Scots' Justin McDowell. A Wyman double into the right-center gap that brought in Jarrod Mancine, who had singled, was the only offense through four innings.

McDowell, who scattered just two hits through four innings, induced the 'Berg into two routine groundouts on just two pitches to start the fifth. A third routine grounder turned into an error, as did a fourth, and then Elvin Williams tripled into the corner in right as Heidelberg took a 2-1 lead.

The 'Berg tacked on three during the sixth with the key hit being a two-run single for Andrzejcak, and they held off another Wooster comeback bid that saw the hosts bring the tying run to the on-deck circle during the seventh before the four-run victory was finalized.

McDowell was the tough-luck loser (5-2), as two of the five runs given up were unearned, and Nino upped his record to 4-2 during 5.0 innings of work. Lowe also completed the nightcap, going the last 2.0 innings, in which the Scots got to him for two runs.

Offensively on the day, Wellstead and Farrow headlined Wooster. Wellstead rapped out five hits and walked once over the two games (5-for-9), while Farrow went 4-for-9 with five RBI.

Andrzejczak produced a five-hit, five-RBI day (5-for-10).

The Scots will be right back in action Thursday at John Carroll University (16-17).
