A couple of College of Wooster players were named to the NCAA Div. III All-Mideast Region Team, as senior shortstop Greg Van Horn and freshman outfielder Zac Mathie picked up second- and third-team honors, respectively, the American Baseball Coaches Association announced Tuesday.

Van Horn, now a two-time all-region award winner in his two seasons at Wooster after having collected a first-team nod last spring, headlined the Fighting Scots' offense with a .422 batting average (54-for-128) plus 19 walks and 19 hit by pitches for a .548 on-base percentage, which ranks eighth in the nation. Of his 54 hits, 16 went for extra bases (11 doubles, two triples, and three home runs), and he scored a team-high 42 runs. Also of note, Van Horn is among the Div. III leaders (top-100) in steals with 22 in 23 attempts, and he contributed 27 RBI.

Mathie, one of just three freshmen recognized on this year's All-Mideast Region Team, stepped right into the starting lineup for all 39 games, primarily batting in the clean-up spot and playing left field. The lefty power hitter finished with a .346 average (54-for-156), 12 doubles, five home runs, and 42 RBI. He rates among the top-100 in Div. III with 1.08 RBI per game, to go with 27 runs scored. Mathie's season included a team-best 16-game hitting streak from April 3-May 4 and three games with a double and a homer, including a 3-for-4, seven-RBI performance against Case Western Reserve University April 17.

Wooster compiled a 22-17 record and placed third at the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament during 2011.
