Scots Power Past Crusaders 15-6

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster scored in every inning except for two, pounding out 16 hits en route to a 15-6 non-conference victory over Capital University on Monday afternoon at Art Murray Field, where a stiff wind was blowing out to straightaway center.

Wooster (15-11) jumped out to a 6-0 lead through one inning, with the Fighting Scots' big hit being a two-out, three-run home run off the bat of Zack Vesco when Capital (12-16) could have escaped the early jam down just 2-0. Then, Jake Zeek followed by crushing the ball well over the left-field fence, marking the freshman's first career round-tripper.

The Crusaders quickly erased that six-run deficit via a single tally during the second and a five-spot in the third, with Anthony Calabrese's two-out RBI double into the right-center gap evening it 6-6.

The tie was short lived, as in the bottom of the third, Eddie Reese poked a solo shot to the opposite field (right) for his team-leading sixth homer this spring and 7-6 advantage.

Craig Day delivered a solo home run as part of a two-run fourth, then Wooster loaded the bases with nobody out in the fifth and Zeek, who was hit by a pitch, scored on a double play to make it 10-6.

The Scots broke the game completely open during the sixth inning. They again filled the bases without an out being recorded and Vesco delivered the first of the five runs via a sacrifice fly. Next, Wooster took advantage of a couple of misplays by the Capital defense on pop-ups. The heavy winds (a wind advisory was issued by the national weather service) wreaked havoc with the fielders throughout.

Making his first career start on the mound, senior Colin Meinzer picked up the win (1-0) after working the first five innings. The right-hander struck out seven, and outside of the five-run, five-hit third, was effective as he allowed just one additional run and three other hits.

At the plate, Reese went 3-for-4 to lead the Scots in hits and Vesco's four RBI came on a 2-for-3 outing.

Wooster will play for the fourth time in five days on Tuesday, as it will make up a previously postponed doubleheader when it visits North Coast Athletic Conference East Division foe Hiram College (8-20, 0-12 NCAC East), starting at noon.
