The sixth inning was good to The College of Wooster on Tuesday, as it scored twice that frame  to edge Hiram College 4-3 in the opener, then homered three times as part of a five-run sixth that keyed a 12-2 run-rule, game-two victory, as the Fighting Scots swept the Terriers for the second time in three days in North Coast Athletic Conference East Division play.

Wooster (17-11, 5-3 NCAC East), now winners of six in a row, averted an upset in Tuesday's first game when Cal Thomay started the sixth with a leadoff walk, followed by an Eddie Reese double. Then, Craig Day brought them both home on a single to go ahead 4-3.

Steve Hagen worked 1-2-3 innings in both the sixth and seventh to secure the win over Hiram (8-22, 0-14 NCAC East), while recording his second complete game of the season. Hagen improved to 4-2, and the three runs that the Terriers scored were all in the second inning when the Scots committed a pair of costly errors.

Wooster's other two runs in the opener came in similar fashion. Thomay drew a walk to open the second inning, Reese doubled, and with one out, Zack Vesco drove them in with a two-bagger.

The nightcap saw the Scots holding a 4-2 lead entering the sixth when they broke it open with a power surge, featuring home runs by Day, Zac Mathie, and Johnathan Ray. Day led off the inning with a solo shot, Mathie greeted a relief pitcher with a three-run dinger, and Ray made it back-to-back homers, resulting in a 9-2 cushion.

Wooster tacked on three more in the seventh, including a two-run double off the bat of Bryan Miller, to reach the 10-run mercy rule.

On the mound for the Scots, Zach Washinski and Kyle Koski combined to limit Hiram to one earned run and seven hits in the seven innings. Washinski notched the win (1-1) and Koski tallied the save via three effective innings.

Reese belted three doubles during a combined 3-for-5 effort, while Frank Vance had three hits in four at bats in the second game alone. Jarrod Mancine also produced a three-hit day by going 3-for-7 on the day, including a two-run single to put the Scots ahead 2-0 during the second inning of game two.

After a busy five-day, seven-game stretch, Wooster is off until Saturday when it travels to divisional foe Oberlin College (16-18, 5-7 NCAC East).
