Jarrod Mancine from The College of Wooster was selected to the Capital One Academic All-America Team for baseball, earning second-team honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America, the organization announced Wednesday. Mancine is Wooster's lone student-athlete to be an Academic All-American® for the 2013-14 academic year, an unusual occurrence as the school had four such honorees a year ago, and he's the Fighting Scots' first baseball player to earn the prestigious recognition since 2007.

"It's a great accomplishment. (It) speaks really well for Jarrrod balancing baseball and academics, and making them both work about as well as (they can) work," said Tim Pettorini, who just wrapped up his 33rd season as head coach at Wooster. "He was really an outstanding player for us for four years."

Mancine, who graduated with a 3.45 cumulative grade-point average while majoring in mathematics, capped his career in 2014 with his best season. Previously a unanimous first-team all-Mideast Region pick and the North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year, the senior leadoff hitter batted .432, scored  50 runs, and drove in 35. Among his 73 hits, which ranked 17th nationally in Div. III despite not having the benefit of playing in the NCAA postseason, were 15 doubles, one triple, and four home runs. He also ended up among the national leaders in batting average (27th), runs (30th), and on-base percentage (24th; .517).

Over four years at Wooster, Mancine hit .392 (186-for-475) – the ninth-best average in the program's tradition-rich offensive history. He totaled 124 runs, 31 doubles, eight triples, five homers, 75 RBI, and 30 stolen bases over 134 games, as well as 63 walks and 21 hit by pitches, part of a .475 on-base percentage, which also rates as the ninth-highest in school annals.

The Academic All-America® program, started in 1952 by CoSIDA, annually recognizes approximately 800 student-athletes who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom in Divisions I, II, and III, and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
