Michael Wielansky

Sophomore Michael Wielansky of The College of Wooster earned North Coast Athletic Conference Player-of-the-Week honors, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.

Wielansky logged a .524 average (11-for-21) and reached base safely seven more times for a .621 on-base percentage as the ninth-ranked Fighting Scots went 5-1 during their first week in Florida.

The shortstop reached base safely in his first 11 plate appearances of the spring trip. In the Florida opening, Wielansky went 3-for-3 with four runs scored, three walks, and a solo homer during Wooster's 7-0 win over Susquehanna University. In fact, Wielansky finished a triple shy of the cycle in that game, and came to the plate in the ninth inning with a chance for one, but settled for his third walk in the game.

In Wooster's next game, went 4-for-4 with four runs, two triples, two RBI and two stolen bases in last Tuesday's 16-2 win over Mount Saint Mary University (N.Y.). Ironically, Wielansky's first hit in that game was a triple.

Last Wednesday, Wielansky saw his string of consecutive games reaching base safely snapped at 48, but he played a major factor in a 5-2 win over Arcadia University by driving in the go-ahead run with an eighth inning sacrifice fly.

Other highlights of Wielansky's week included a triple in Friday's 12-5 win over Western Connecticut State University and an RBI double in Saturday's 8-5 setback against Adrian College.

The honor marks Wielansky's second career NCAC Player of the Week honor. He previously earned the award on May 2, 2016.

Wooster, winners of a 3-1 game against No. 25 North Central College (Ill.) on Monday, faces the Cardinals again on Tuesday at Port Charlotte, Fla. First pitch is slated for noon.
