Junior Jake Fling of The College of Wooster earned national recognition for his performances at the plate last week as the center fielder was a honorable mention Div. III National Hitter-of-the-Week, as announced by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) on Thursday morning.
Fling, who was tabbed as the North Coast Athletic Conference Player-of-the-Week on Monday, hit .522 (12-for-23) during Wooster's 5-0 week (April 17-23) that included a doubleheader sweep over Kenyon College, a 19-3 win over Denison University, an 8-5 win over regional rival Marietta College, and a 4-3 win at John Carroll University. The Scots' No. 2 hitter knocked in 12 runs during that span, including two on a go-ahead single in the top of the ninth inning against the Blue Streaks.
Earlier in the week, Fling went 6-for-8 in league play against the Lords with three RBI in each game. In the first game on April 17, Fling had three extra base hits in two doubles and a triple. Then, in the nightcap, Fling stole four bases, a first for a Fighting Scot since recently inducted W Association Hall of Famer Matt Miller did so against Hiram College in 2004. Coincidentally, Wooster (25-6, 10-2 NCAC East) and Hiram (14-15, 4-8 NCAC) square off in a four-game series this weekend at Art Murray Field with first pitch slated for noon on Saturday and Sunday.
This marks the second straight year Wooster's had a student-athlete recognized by the NCBWA. Last year, junior Nanak Saran earned honorable mention pitcher-of-the-week honors on May 5.
