Senior Michael Houdek and sophomore Michael Wielansky of The College of Wooster were voted first-team academic all-district for baseball by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced on Thursday.
Both student-athletes now advance to the ballot for Academic All-American® consideration.
Houdek, a political science major with a 3.46 grade-point average, was one of two pitchers voted to the all-district team. Houdek, the ace of Wooster's pitching staff, is 7-2 on the season with a 3.67 ERA in 61 1/3 innings of work. The lefty won his 25th career game last week during a 10-5 triumph over Case Western Reserve University, and then moved into Wooster's prestigious top 10 list for career wins when he won No. 26 during an 11-1 win over Hiram College.
Wielansky, a business economics major with a 3.30 grade-point average, was one of four infielders voted to the first-team. Through games as of May 2, the sophomore ranks second nationally with 56 runs and was 19th with a .530 on-base percentage. With his next run, Wielansky will be the second Scot in the tradition-rich program history to record 60 runs in back-to-back seasons as he touched home three times during Wednesday's doubleheader versus Otterbein University to bring his total to 59.
Within NCAA Div. III District 7 (Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio), just 12 student-athletes were honored by CoSIDA, and Wooster was one of three institutions with multiple honorees, while Houdek and Wielansky accounted for two of the three honorees from North Coast Athletic Conference institutions.
Houdek and Wielansky are the first Scots to earn academic all-district honors since alums Jarrod Mancine and Cal Thomay did so in 2014.
