Senior first baseman Jamie Lackner and sophomore shortstop Michael Wielansky earned first-team All-America certificates from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), the organization announced on Thursday evening during the opening ceremonies of the NCAA Div. III College World Series. Earlier on Thursday, Lackner earned a second-team All-America certificate from D3baseball.com.
Lackner joins an exclusive club with his ABCA certificate, as he's the third three-time All-America selection by the coaches' organization, and joins W Association Hall of Famers Jake Frank (2003-05) and Rick Sforzo (1985-87). Overall, Lackner's earned a program-best five All-America nods between the ABCA and D3baseball.com, although the latter didn't start its All-America program until 2007.
On the season, Lackner turned in a .532 on-base percentage to couple with a .408 (69-for-169) average, and he was above .500 and .400 respectively in those two stats over the final three seasons of his career. Additionally, the slugger had over 50 RBI in each of his last three seasons and finished third on Wooster's all-time list with 193.
Wielansky, a first-time All-America selection, continued to flourish as one of Div. III's premier shortstops. Through the regional tournaments, the sophomore is tops in Div. III in total bases (136) and runs (69), while ranking fourth in hits (79). This season Wielansky became the second Scot great to score 60 or more runs in back-to-back seasons with W Association Hall of Famer Trevor Urban being the only other player in program history to lay claim to that feat. Wielansky hit an impressive .374 as a freshman, but upped that over 50 percentage points to .425 (79-for-186) as a sophomore, and his on-base percentage also rose from .461 to .509.
Of note, this is the third time Wooster's had multiple first-team ABCA All-America selections in the same season.
