For the third straight year a member of The College of Wooster baseball team led the nation in a statistical category as sophomore Michael Wielansky's 69 runs ranked on top of the Div. III leaderboard, per the final NCAA statistical ranking report.
Wielansky, who last week earned first-team All-America honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association, finished one run ahead of Adrian College's Ian Mikowski and two in front of University of Texas at Dallas' Josh Covey.
Wielansky's run total was jump-started during the start of the College's annual two-week spring trip to Florida where the speedy sophomore touched home four times against Susquehanna University and Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.). In all, the shortstop had 20 multi-run games, including four straight between April 13-17.
Wielansky became the second Wooster great to have back-to-back 60-run seasons this year, and his 69 runs helped the Fighting Scots rate first in the country with 9.5 runs per game.
Noteworthy, this is the second time in the last three seasons Wooster's featured Div. III's highest scoring offense.
Last year, senior Jamie Lackner tied for first in Div. III in walks, and he topped Div. III in homers, RBI, and total bases as a sophomore.
