Michael Wielansky

For the second straight year, The College of Wooster's Michael Wielansky topped the Div. III leaderboard in runs, per the final NCAA statistical ranking report, and overall, the feat marks the fourth straight year a Fighting Scot has finished as a national statistical leader. Additionally, Wooster led the way nationally in four statistical categories, including fielding percentage, where the Scots checked in at .978.

Wielansky, who was a consensus first-team All-American, as announced by the American Baseball Coaches Association and the popular online website D3baseball.com leading up to the Div. III Championships, scored a career-high 76 times this season to finish one run up on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's Daytona Bryden and nine better than Spalding University's Garrett Wilson. Wielansky scored at least one run in 39 of the Scots' 50 games, including 18 straight from March 31 through April 26. During that 18-game span, Wielansky scored three or more runs nine times, including five in the opening game of Wooster's doubleheader sweep over Hiram College on April 5.

Wielansky scored his 200th career run on May 17 during Wooster's 4-2 win over North Coast Athletic Conference rival Wabash College in the opening game of the Mideast Regional, and that made the junior sensation the second known player in Div. III history with 200 hits, 200 runs, and 150 RBI before the end of his junior year.

Wielansky's 69 runs as a sophomore were one better than Adrian College's Ian Mikowski and two in front of University of Texas at Dallas' Josh Covey.

Defensively, Wooster made 42 errors, three shy of the single-season program record since Div. III was established, which coincidentally came last season when the Scots' also had a .978 fielding percentage, which was the third-best nationally. Overall, Wooster's finished in the top three nationally in fielding percentage in each of the last three seasons. This season, each student-athlete who started at least half of Wooster's games turned in a fielding percentage of .960 or better.

Offensively, Wooster's 658 hits, 516 runs, and 139 doubles were Div. III bests on the year. The Scots' 658 base knocks are 18 better than the 2009 squad's 640, while the 516 runs are the second-most in program history and it's just the third time the Black & Gold have scored at least 500 runs in a season. In terms of two-baggers, the Scots' 139 rank eight better than the previous school record set in 2006.

This spring, Wooster finished 40-10, advanced to the Div. III Championships for the sixth time in program history, won the Mideast Regional, and upped its league-lead in NCAC championships to 18.
