Wooster's Bats Quieted at Piedmont

Grant Mitchell, Wooster Baseball DEMOREST, Georgia – The College of Wooster baseball team was unable to get back on track in Georgia, falling 6-2 to Piedmont University on Wednesday evening.

Wooster (9-6) scored its runs in the top of the ninth inning. Sophomore catcher Grant Craig was hit by a pitch to start the inning, then senior shortstop Eli Westrick and senior second baseman Grant Mitchell laced back-to-back singles to load the bases. Junior third baseman Nick Pett's fielder's choice plated Wooster's first run of the game. Wooster's second run scored on sophomore left fielder Dan Hanson's RBI single.

Senior Corey Knauf (2-2) continued his dominance early, retiring the side in order in the first and third innings. His scoreless streak reached 14 innings before Piedmont (11-6) got to the right-hander in the sixth inning for four runs. Isaak Mullanack snapped the scoreless streak with a three-run homer. Knauf exited after seven innings with six runs (five earned) on six hits on his line. First-year Ben Tarpey sent the Lions back to the dugout in order in the eighth.

Mitchell and Westrick combined for four of Wooster's five hits. Mullanack went 3-for-3 with five RBI and finished a double shy of the cycle for Piedmont.

Bodie Eilertson earned the win with six shutout innings, during which he allowed one hit and struck out nine.

Next, Wooster plays at Emory University (11-9) at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 21.
