Matthew Johnson

Matthew Johnson, a third-team American Baseball Coaches Association All-American as a senior, is in his sixth year at his alma mater as an assistant coach, and his fifth year as the lead assistant. Johnson’s taken over as the Fighting Scots’ pitching coach, and he’s the program’s recruiting coordinator.

Wooster is 111-72-1 with two regional titles, a North Coast Athletic Conference championship, an ABCA Gold Glove winner, eight All-Americans, and three College Sports Communicators Academic All-Americans® since Johnson joined the staff.

Johnson, who signed a free agent contract with Major League Baseball’s Toronto Blue Jays upon graduation, started at both shortstop and second base for the Scots. During his minor league career, Johnson was converted to a relief pitcher and had a 3.16 ERA spanning 50 appearances.

As a senior, Johnson batted out of the leadoff spot and compiled a .459 average with 14 doubles, a school-record eight triples, and a team-leading 11 home runs. He scored 69 times, ranking second in NCAA Div. III in runs scored (1.60 per game), and drove in 41 runs, while also drawing 20 walks as part of a .532 on-base percentage and stealing 14 bases.

Johnson graduated with a degree in psychology in 2010.

He is married to Kristy, and the couple has a son, Montgomery.
