Dual-Threat Barnes Earns NCAC Offensive P-O-W Honors

Quarterback Richard Barnes was dangerous through the air and on the ground Saturday, as he totaled nearly 300 yards of offense and three touchdowns to lead The College of Wooster to a convincing 42-21 victory over Allegheny College, which earned him North Coast Athletic Conference Offensive Player-of-the-Week honors, the league office announced Monday.

The senior made key throws when he needed to, completing 16 passes for 157 yards and a score, but it was as a runner where he did the most damage. Barnes nearly outrushed Allegheny himself, with 129 yards on 22 carries (5.9 avg), compared to 158 yards for the Gators.

More importantly, Barnes rushed into the end zone twice, with both scores coming during a 3:40 spurt. First, Barnes took it up the middle from three yards out to put Wooster ahead 28-14 at the end of the third quarter, and then he got loose for a 10-yard run early in the fourth to push the advantage to 35-14. His passing touchdown came shortly after on a 20-yard hookup with Keir Pace, which cemented Barnes' strong statistical day and sealed the outcome of the game.

It was the second-highest rushing total of Barnes' career, only behind the 150 yards he put up against this same Allegheny team last year.

The Scots (3-2, 3-1 NCAC) will look to keep it going this weekend when they host nationally-ranked Wittenberg University (4-1, 4-0 NCAC) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
