2014 Academic All-District Team

Two College of Wooster student-athletes – Nick Flannery and Tyler Gerwig – were named to the Capital One Academic All-District Team for football, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday. As first-team selections, Flannery and Gerwig both advance to the national ballot, and the Academic All-America Team® is set to be announced in early December.

Flannery, a junior offensive lineman, is a three-year starter, including 19 consecutive games at left tackle. He's played a key part in Wooster ranking third in the North Coast Athletic Conference in total offense at 407.9 yards per game as well as in rushing offense (205.0 ypg) this season. The Scots are just slightly off their pace from 2013 when they set a school record for total offense (421.2 ypg), and in 2012, Flannery was voted the team's freshman offensive player of the year.

A psychology major, Flannery holds a 3.94 cumulative grade-point average and has earned spots on the Dean's List and North Coast Athletic Conference Academic Honor Roll. He plans to pursue a doctorate in psychology.

Gerwig, a senior punter, is averaging 37.1 yards per attempt with a long of 60 thus far this season. It marks his second year as the team's punter as well as serving as the kicker on long field goals, and he previously was the kickoff specialist. Last fall, Gerwig boomed a punt 74 yards – the second-longest in school history – as part of a 36.5 average, and he made a 43-yard field goal.

Majoring in chemistry, Gerwig maintains a 3.94 GPA and has earned prestigious academic accolades at Wooster – the John W. Chittum Prize (top student in organic chemistry) and the Theron L. Peterson and Dorothy R. Peterson Award (junior who exhibits outstanding academic achievement) – while also being named to the Dean's List and NCAC Academic Honor Roll. He plans to go to med school.

The honorees were selected by CoSIDA among top players with minimum 3.30 GPAs from within Wooster's district (Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio).
