Nick Flannery and Tyler Gerwig of The College of Wooster took up two of the 26 spots on the Capital One Academic All-America First Team for NCAA Div. III football, it was announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Tuesday.

Wooster was one of just three schools with multiple first-team Academic All-Americans® this fall, and it is the first time since 1980 that two Fighting Scots were recognized as such in the same gridiron season.

"I'm so proud of Nick and Tyler. They're both very deserving of this prestigious honor," stated Frank Colaprete, who completed his second year as head coach. "We're continuing to seek out these type of high character students with outstanding football ability when it comes to recruiting here."

Flannery, a junior and three-year starter on the offensive line, held down the left tackle position for all 10 games this season, giving him 21 consecutive starts there. He was tabbed with honorable mention on the All-North Coast Athletic Conference Team after playing a key role on a unit that led the league in total offense at the year's midway point (445.8 ypg). Wooster finished with the NCAC's third-ranked rushing offense (172.9 ypg), and is among the top-100 in Div. III in that category, as well as fifth-rated total offense (385.6 ypg).

A psychology major, Flannery carries a 3.94 cumulative grade-point average and has previously been selected for Dean's List and NCAC Academic Honor Roll accolades. He plans to pursue a doctorate in psychology.

Gerwig, a senior, was the team's top punter and kickoff specialist the last two seasons and also attempted long field goals. With a 36.5 yard average, he wound up fifth in the conference, and currently 88th nationally, in punting this year, and he never had one blocked over 91 career attempts. His career long was a 74-yarder – the second-longest in school history – and he also once booted through a 43-yard field goal – the longest by a Scot kicker since 2002.

Majoring in chemistry, Gerwig also currently owns a 3.94 GPA. Among the many academic honors he has received while at Wooster are the John W. Chittum Prize in chemistry and the Theron L. and Dorthy R. Peterson Award for outstanding academic achievement. Gerwig is a health coach at Wooster Community Hospital and plans to go to med school.
