Johnson's Big Plays Lead to NCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Week Honor

 Patrick Johnson

A big play by sophomore Patrick Johnson on the game's opening drive helped spark a six-takeaway night for The College of Wooster football team, and for his overall efforts Saturday, Johnson was selected as the North Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, as announced by the league office.

The sophomore defensive back forced a fumble on a 2nd-and-8 play minutes into the game, then recovered it himself to set up the offense at the Allegheny College 46-yard line, leading to a score.

Johnson helped key a second Wooster touchdown in the fourth quarter. With 3:53 remaining, he intercepted a pass at the Allegheny 36, and two plays later, the Fighting Scots ran in the game-clinching score as they went ahead 28-6.

Johnson also had a key five-yard tackle for a loss at the start of the fourth, and tied for second on the team in tackles with six.

He is the first Wooster defensive player to be honored by the NCAC since then-defensive back Brandon James (Nov. 11, 2013). James now helps coach the defensive backs for the Scots.
