Nick Flannery, a standout offensive lineman throughout his career with The College of Wooster football team, was selected as one of 29 male fall sport student-athletes to be awarded a prestigious NCAA postgraduate scholarship, the NCAA announced on Thursday.

Flannery is the fourth Fighting Scot football player to have received the scholarship and 14th Wooster student-athlete overall, but first since the 2012-13 academic year.

"It's a special award that only the elite of the elite receive," remarked third-year head coach Frank Colaprete. "It confirms what we already know about Nick (and) how special his career has been. It's great to see him excel in life, on the field, and in the classroom. It takes a special person to achieve what he has done. We're so proud of him and happy for him."

On the gridiron, Flannery was a four-year starter (38 consecutive games) as he was the primary right tackle as a freshman, left tackle his sophomore and junior seasons, and center as a senior. The 6-2, 255-pound lineman earned all-North Coast Athletic Conference recognition each of the last two years and played an integral role on the 2013 offense that set multiple school records, including total offense at 443.6 yards per game.

A psychology major with a 3.96 cumulative GPA at Wooster, Flannery has previously been named a first-team Academic All-American® twice and a semifinalist for the National Football Foundation's 2015 Campbell Trophy (college football's premier scholar-athlete award) among other honors.

Flannery intends to use the $7,500 NCAA postgraduate scholarship towards his pursuit of a Ph.D. in industrial organizational psychology. He has already been accepted to three schools and will be finalizing his postgraduate plans soon.

"I'm pretty excited. I think it's a great honor," said Flannery. "I'm proud of what I've been able to accomplish, but a lot of credit goes to the resources that I've been able to take advantage of at Wooster and to the people who have been behind me throughout … my teammates, coaches, friends, and professors, and most of all, my parents."

NCAA postgraduate scholarships are awarded annually to 174 student-athletes, who are selected by a committee that screens candidates whom maintain at least a 3.2 GPA, have performed and behaved with distinction on and off the playing field, and intend to continue their academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree.
