The College of Wooster's Patrick Mohorcic was voted by college football fans as the 2017 Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team® captain for his exceptional community service accomplishments and dedication to giving back to those in need, as announced by Allstate Insurance Company and the AFCA on Monday. To commemorate his achievement, Mohorcic was recognized by Allstate and the AFCA during the live broadcast of The Home Depot College Football Awards, which aired on ESPN at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7.

"This is one of the most impressive things I've ever been a part of as a college coach," said head coach Frank Colaprete. "I couldn't be more proud and more happy of a young man who is so deserving of this honor and opportunity. It's pretty special, and so is Patrick."

"It's a truly humbling honor," added Mohorcic. "There are a lot of great student-athletes on the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®. I'm really appreciative of all the Wooster fans who voted for me. We went up against several Div. I powerhouses, and it goes to show how powerful the Wooster family is. I'm very appreciative to be a part of it."

A senior and three-year starter on Wooster's offensive line, Mohorcic earned a place on this year's Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® for his selfless commitment to Men Working For Change, a student organization on campus. Mohorcic, one of the students who helped revitalize the organization, advocates for the prevention of sexual violence on campus, and the organization serves as an awareness group about ways to prevent sexual assaults through seminars and other planned events.

During his time at the College, Mohorcic co-founded ScotsCare, an organization with a vision to develop a positive connection between Wooster athletic programs and students with special needs within the Wooster community. Additionally, Mohorcic was nominated by the College's faculty and his peers for the "Student Leadership Institute," a class dedicated to the development of leadership skills and how to utilize the social change model to impact the College and greater community.

Elsewhere on campus, Mohorcic was selected to serve on the search committee for the College's new Title IX coordinator, and he's heavily involved with APEX – the College's integrated center for academic and career advising, planning, and experiential learning.

"Patrick is a superb member of The College of Wooster community," said Sarah Bolton, Wooster's president. "He has made tremendous contributions in the classroom, with the football team, and across campus, especially in his leadership of Men Working For Change. We are very proud of Patrick, and so pleased that his great work is being honored in this way."

Within the community, Mohorcic's helped with the planning and day-of event management for "Rock the Block," an event that promotes local businesses in South Euclid, Ohio.

Other notable connections for Mohorcic include his participation in the (i)Cleveland Summer Program, an experiential civic education that connects interns in Northeast Ohio to vast cultural, community, and leadership resources throughout the community.

"Patrick is a fantastic ambassador for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® and all of these student-athletes who go the extra mile to positively impact the lives of others," stated Thomas Clarkson, president of the west territory for Allstate Insurance Company, in Allstate's release. "Allstate is proud to play a role in honoring Patrick for his achievements off the field, and for being a leader and a role model in The College of Wooster community. We are thrilled to recognize a young man that embodies the characteristics of what this award represents."

Noteworthy, Mohorcic's the first Wooster student-athlete to be named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, and he's the second team captain from a Div. III program.

Mohorcic will share his passion for service with his fellow Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® members during a special volunteer project prior to the 2018 Allstate® Sugar Bowl®, and the players will be honored on the field at halftime during the game on Jan. 1.

Twenty-two players were selected to the final roster – 11 from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and a combined 11 from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, NCAA Div. II, NCAA Div. III, and the NAIA – from this year's 146 nominees. ESPN and Allstate then sponsored an online fan vote to determine the team captain.
