Senior Salute: Mark Herron

Mark Herron sidebar Q&A

Throughout the spring and summer, we'll be honoring our senior student-athletes with a "Senior Salute" series. Today's featured senior is Mark Herron, a history major from Youngstown, Ohio. Herron is a member of the football and track & field teams.

Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: My high school selected a few students for a summer program that brought us to Wooster for two weeks each summer. The program took us on college visits, prepared us for college interviews, and gave us a taste of what college is like. I appreciated the opportunity and made The College of Wooster my home for the last four years.

Q: What does it mean to you to be a Fighting Scot student-athlete?
A: Being a Fighting Scot student-athlete means being a well-prepared individual for the busy world. This commitment calls for useful life skills, such as week planning, discipline, and teamwork.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: My favorite memories involve hanging out with my amazing peers and learning about them and their diverse backgrounds.

Q: What's the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: The best parts are moments where things get tough and it feels like you are unable to overcome them, but then you hang in there and succeed. Other best parts including making those lifelong friendships and of course winning!

Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: Keeping my head in the books.

Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: There are so many to choose from, simply because at The College of Wooster, help is able to be found everywhere, from students to faculty to coaches. If I had to choose the most impactful it would be between Coach (Sam) Bauman, Coach (Frank) Colaprete, and Kaylynne Mahone from the Learning Center. I had many complications over the years, and they were the most involved in keeping me on track to graduate.

Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people/resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: Kaylynne Mahone had weekly appointments with me throughout my time here to keep me on track to graduate.

Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: My I.S. project was a historical outlook on Black struggles in American society and the ways that leaders of all backgrounds were involved in the movements that took place for change. I took a look at history and created a plan for the future change in American people.

Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: Breaking records on the indoor track team are some of the coolest things I've done at Wooster. I broke the 60-meter dash and 4x200 relay records at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships. My all-conference awards in football were cool too.

Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what is one piece of advice you would give your first-year (freshman) self?
A: These four years can go by quick and the time is always NOW!
