Scots Break Records in 44-29 Loss at Wittenberg

Bryant Douglas II College of Wooster football SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – More records were set in Saturday afternoon's College of Wooster football season finale, where the Fighting Scots were unable to upend archrival Wittenberg University, falling 44-29 at Edwards-Maurer Field.

Two areas where Wooster (6-4, 5-4 North Coast Athletic Conference) did have success came when matched up one-on-one on the outside and on shots down the field. In fact, the Scots opened by exploiting a one-on-one matchup with first-year Bryant Douglas II hauling in a 42-yard pass down the sideline on the first offensive play of the game. Sophomore Josh Pond followed that up with a 15-yard burst up the middle, senior Cole Hissong moved the chains six yards closer to paydirt, and senior Troy Baughman's 8-yard touchdown reception gave the Scots a 6-0 lead at the 12:54 mark, capping a five-play, 72-yard drive.

Later in the first, senior Mateo Renteria took a shot downfield on third-and-11, and sophomore Carter Warstler was there for a 34-yard reception. Four plays later, Baughman weaved through Wittenberg's (7-3, 7-2 NCAC) defense for a 30-yard touchdown, with junior Lake Barrett's extra point making it a 14-2 game with 3:26 left in the quarter.

Wittenberg scored the next 28 points, starting with Garrett Gross' 2-yard run that pulled the Tigers within 14-9. Wittenberg's lead ballooned to 30-14 before Barrett tied his career-long with a 42-yard field goal as time expired in the first half. Wittenberg forced Wooster into a fourth-and-3 situation prior to the field goal, only to give the Scots a fresh set of downs with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The sure-handed Douglas II went for 13 yards after the penalty, and he added a 5-yard reception just before time expired to move the Scots into field goal range.

The Tigers tried to catch the Scots with a trick play early in the fourth quarter, but senior Dylan Carr was not fooled. The starting corner picked off Sam Kayser at the 2-yard line, then Douglas II had a step on his man, caught Renteria's pass, and stayed ahead of the Tigers chasing after him on his way to a 98-yard touchdown reception. That completion broke Wooster's record, which was previously a 91-yard touchdown pass from Vic Rowcliffe to Phil Puryear at Case Western Reserve University back in 1990. Additionally, it tied the NCAC record for longest touchdown pass and it is tied for the second-longest in NCAA Div. III this fall.

Renteria surpassed Gary Muntean's single-season passing record with a 7-yard pass to Pond on the final drive of the year. Two plays later, Renteria added 20 yards to his line, with that pass hauled in by Douglas II. Of note, Douglas II surpassed 200 yards for the second straight game on the play, and he is the first Scot to have multiple 200-yard receiving games in program history.

Later, senior Cole Hissong secured a spectacular 44-yard grab on a fourth-and-21 play, before Wooster eventually settled for a 21-yard Barrett field goal that pulled the Scots within 44-29 with 4:17 remaining.

Prior to Renteria breaking the single-season passing record, he pinned Wittenberg on its 1-yard line with a 53-yard pooch punt that was downed by senior Kristian Coleman. The Tigers' Bryce Anderson was able to ward off sophomore Domenic DeMuth just long enough to get outside the end zone on the first down carry. On second down, Collin Brown opted to pull the ball on the run-pass option, and sophomore Alex White made him pay with a safety sack.

Renteria completed 24-of-45 passes for 462 yards and three touchdowns, with the yards ranking as the third-most in single-game program history. The senior, who threw for 965 yards the last two weeks, finished the year 223-for-354 with 3,237 yards and 29 touchdowns. His completions, attempts, and passing touchdowns are all the second-most in single-season program history, as are his 162.29 efficiency rating points.

Douglas II turned seven receptions into 209 yards, and he finished the year at 756 stripes. The Scots had two 700-yard receivers on the year, as Hissong's 71 yards Saturday upped the season total to 743. Warstler added five receptions and 90 yards in the season finale.

Junior Matt Ulishney, White, and senior Angelo Petracci tied for the team lead in tackles at eight. Petracci upped his season total to 88, the most since alumnus Mitchell Czerniak's 125 in 2014.

Barrett set a program record for the highest single-season extra-point percentage. He is the lone placekicker in program history to make over 40 extra points in a season without a miss. Barrett finished the year at 71 points, the second-most by a placekicker in program history.

Brown completed 18-of-30 passes for 274 yards and three touchdowns. The Tigers had two receivers go over 100 yards, including Jake Saus, who caught all three touchdowns. Gross had 129 of Wittenberg's 263 yards rushing.

Defensively, Wittenberg caused havoc with three takeaways and six sacks. Conner Walls was the problem with 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

Wittenberg had 541 yards of total offense to Wooster's 476.
