Entering his ninth season overall, and seventh as defensive coordinator at Wooster is Sam Bauman, who also coaches the linebackers and plays a key role in recruiting.

During his first two years, Bauman worked closely with head coach Frank Colaprete, learning the intricacies of the latter’s highly-successful 4-2-5 system, and was then promoted to defensive coordinator prior to the 2015 season. He directly mentored a pair of all-conference linebackers in Mitchell Czerniak and Matt Osolinski, with Czerniak leading the league in tackles in both 2013 (104) and 2014 (125), and overall, the defense produced 28 takeaways (17 interceptions, 11 fumble recoveries) and 29 sacks for the Scots during the 2013 season alone. In 2015, two members of the defense (Patrick Johnson, Stephen McKinney) earned all-conference laurels while Johnson earned a second consecutive all-conference nod in 2016, joining defense end Aaron Roberson on the all-league squad. Last season, Wooster held the opposition to 162 points and 3,433 yards, the program's lowest totals since 2008 and 2011, respectively. Six of the Scots' 11 starters earned all-conference honors in 2019.

Bauman has Midwestern roots and possesses experience at a variety of NCAA Div. III schools from being a four-year letterwinner at Beloit College in Wisconsin to coaching stints at the University of Chicago and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Before joining the Fighting Scots, Bauman spent the 2011 and 2012 campaigns at Rose-Hulman as the Engineers’ linebackers coach, head coach of the jayvee team, and video coordinator. Three of his linebackers earned all-conference recognition, and he helped recruit the largest class in team history.

A defensive backs coach at Chicago in 2010 when the Maroons won the University Athletic Association, Bauman was honored as part of the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year.

Bauman played both safety and linebacker for Beloit, starting three seasons on the gridiron, and he earned a degree in psychology. He later earned a master’s degree in physical education from Indiana State University.
