Wooster Drops High-Scoring Opener Against Sewanee

 Maeven Barry

The College of Wooster field hockey team was part of a high-scoring season-opener with Sewanee, The University of the South, at the 2016 Great Lakes Invitational held on the campus of Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, but the Fighting Scots came up on the short end of a 4-3 contest on Saturday afternoon.

Wooster's deep forward line rallied the Fighting Scots back within one when Maeven Barry scored with 13:42 remaining in the contest.

With just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Wooster pulled within two (4-2) on an Erika Womack goal, that was set up by a helper from Kerry O'Connor.

Senior Rachel Wetzel set up classmate Leah Prescott on Wooster's first goal of the afternoon in the 13th minute.

After Barry's second goal, first-year goalkeeper Madi Thomas turned aside three Sewanee (1-0) shot attempts down the stretch, and Wooster's defense was settled in at that point, warding off four penalty corners over a 3:08 clip, to keep it a one-goal deficit. In fact, the three saves by Thomas came on the only shots Sewanee attempted in the second half.

On the offensive end, three of Wooster's 15 shot attempts came in the 68th minute, but the Scots could not punch in the game-tying goal. For the game, Wooster finished with a 15-10 advantage on shots.

Sewanee was led by Virginia Barry, who scored three of the Tigers' four goals. Katya Waters added seven saves.

Wooster squares off against Centre College (1-0) at the Great Lakes Invitational at noon on Sunday.
