Scots Tune-Up for NCAC With Tough Regional Foe Centre

Leah Prescott

The College of Wooster field hockey team prepped for its North Coast Athletic Conference opener with a challenging non-conference tilt on Sunday in the team's second contest at the 2016 Great Lakes Invitational held at the campus of Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. Wooster fell to a tough Centre College squad by a 9-1 count.

Wooster (0-2) nearly got on the board first in the fourth minute off of a penalty corner. Junior Lauren Abbott, who started the corner off, worked her way back into the play, and her shot attempt banged off the post of the cage.

Freshman Madi Thomas and the Fighting Scots defense warded off two of the first three shot attempts from the Colonels (2-0), but Centre opened up a 5-1 halftime advantage.

Wooster scored its goal with 9:30 remaining in the opening stanza when senior Rachel Wetzel found classmate Leah Prescott to cap a penalty corner play. Coincidentally, the Prescott-from-Wetzel combination was the same as Wooster's first goal on Saturday at the Great Lakes Invitational.

The Scots had another big offensive chance just before halftime, as Wooster had four penalty corners in the final minute of the stanza, but the Scots' shot attempt was blocked by a Centre defender.

Hayley Barker led Centre with three goals.

Wooster opens the home and conference portion of its schedule with a 4:30 p.m. clash against NCAC Preseason Coaches' Poll favorite Kenyon College (1-1) on Wednesday.
