Scots Fall to Kenyon in Conference Opener

Emma Roderick

WOOSTER, Ohio - The College of Wooster field hockey team fell by a count of 3-0 to Kenyon College today as the Fighting Scots opened North Coast Athletic Conference play this afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.

In the seventh minute, Kenyon's Shannon Hart managed to handle her way past Wooster goalkeeper Lida LeVine for a shot on goal, only to be denied by Wooster junior Emma Roderick, whose diving defensive save nullified Hart's effort. However, as the ball rested before the goal line, Kenyon's Hannah Paterakis followed up on the blocked shot to give the Ladies a 1-0 lead.

Before halftime, Kenyon would double its advantage thanks to a goal from Katelyn Hutchinson in the 34th minute as Paterakis again involved herself in a goal-scoring play, this time tallying the assist.

At the start of the second half, Wooster looked primed for an opportunity to get on the scoreboard. Senior Rachel Wetzel found herself set for a shot in front of Kenyon goalkeeper Sarah Speroff, whose initial save rebounded to fellow senior Sarah McGrath, who ripped an attempt on frame only to be denied again by Speroff.

The Ladies kept up the offensive pressure as the half rolled on. In the 52nd minute, Hutchinson scored her second goal of the game after a deft display of dribbling left her with an open shot for Kenyon's third and final goal.

The Scots recorded 10 shots total, compared to Kenyon's 14. LeVine tallied four saves on the day.

Wooster, in the midst of a five-game homestand hosts Concordia University (Wis.) (0-1) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10.
