WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster field hockey team kicked off Black & Gold Weekend with a strong offensive showcase against Earlham College, defeating the Quakers 3-2 at John P. Papp Stadium on Friday evening.

The Fighting Scots (3-3, 1-1 NCAC) fired off 25 shots in the game, including 15 in the first half.

Sophomore Maeven Barry got the Scots rolling just minutes before the halftime whistle, as junior Lauren Abbott fed one into the mix for a Barry put-away, giving Wooster a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute.

In the 47th, Senior Rachel Wetzel deftly dribbled past two Earlham defenders at the top of the circle to find fellow senior Kayla O'Connor, who deflected it in to make it a 2-0 Wooster lead.

Earlham (3-3, 0-2 NCAC) halved the deficit in the 59th minute as Thu Pham one-touched a pass from Isabella Grasso near-post to bring the Quakers within one with eleven minutes remaining in the game.

Less than 90 seconds later, however, Wooster added the insurance goal it needed.

This time, Wetzel netted the unassisted goal, dribbling it into the circle and firing a shot past Earlham 'keeper Kudzai Mushongahande for her first goal of the season.

Earlham did manage another tally, as a Quaker penalty corner in the final seconds of the match allowed play to continue despite the corner commencing after the clock reached zero.

Kaitlyn Brunner took the corner for the Quakers, pinging it towards the top of the circle to Megan Hut, who fired it low and left, deflecting off Brunner's stick as she sat on the far post for Earlham's second goal and the final play of the match.

Wooster goalkeeper Lida LeVine recorded five saves on the day.

The Scots are back in action on Saturday as they get set to host DePauw University (3-2, 1-0 NCAC) at 11 a.m. at John P. Papp Stadium.
