DePauw Rallies, Denies Wooster Victory with Strong Second Half

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster field hockey team boasted its best offensive showcase of the season behind a season-best performance from seniors Kayla O'Connor and Leah Prescott, but was unable to maintain a second-half lead as the Fighting Scots fell to DePauw University 6-5 at John P. Papp Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

DePauw (4-2, 2-0 NCAC) got on the board in the second minute as Paige Berliner converted on a one-two combination with a feed from teammate Reilly Bruce to take the early 1-0 lead.

Kayla O'Connor brought the Scots level in the 14th minute, after a pass from Prescott found an awaiting O'Connor, who opened up for a one-time shot and score.

In the 17th minute, Berliner proved facilitator for the Tigers, finding Erika Bell as she managed the put-away to retake the lead.

Down 2-1, the Scots fired off a three-goal spurt in less than two minutes.

Senior Rachel Wetzel got things rolling for Wooster, striking a shot from just inside the arc as it deflected off a DePauw defender and into the goal to equalize in the 21st minute.
Senior Kerry O'Connor deflected in a goal, that at the time put Wooster on top of DePauw 4-2.

After the restart, the Scots quickly gained back possession as Wetzel pick-pocketed a defender in Wooster's attacking third. The senior streaked down the middle to find Kerry O'Connor, who deflected it in for the Scots' second goal in less than 90 seconds as they retook a 3-2 lead.

Wooster was not done yet, however, as Prescott found Kayla O'Connor for the second time in the half, as she scored just 15 seconds after the previous goal to give Wooster a 4-2 lead in the 23rd minute.

DePauw responded in the 25th minute as Bell converted with an assist from Reilly to bring the Tigers within one.

Before the half, Bell tallied her third goal of the game after pouncing on a rebound to tie the game at 4-4 in the 33rd minute.

Not willing to relinquish the lead, the Scots scored what would be their final goal just 22 seconds before the halftime whistle, as again a Prescott-to-Kayla O'Connor connection landed a goal for Wooster, giving the Scots a 5-4 lead going into the break.

Both teams battled throughout the second half, as DePauw's Addie Ball scored off the assist from Rose Revolinski from a penalty corner to tie it up at 5-5 in the 48th minute.

In the 67th minute, the Tigers' Gretchen Bechthold deflected the ball in off a pass from Reilly Bruce to retake the lead for the first time since the 21st minute.

DePauw would hold off the Scots' remaining efforts to stay undefeated in North Coast Athletic Conference play.

Wooster goalkeeper Lida LeVine totaled a season-high 22 saves on the day, coming off 47 shots from DePauw.

The Scots return to action next Friday as they resume conference play at Wittenberg University (3-2, 1-1 NCAC) at 6 p.m.
