O'Connor's Overtime Goal Lifts Wooster to 5-4 Win Over Oberlin

WOOSTER, Ohio – Senior Kayla O'Connor saved a lengthy pass from going out of bounds, and then scored the game-winner 2:07 into overtime when she slid a shot between the post and a defender's stick as The College of Wooster field hockey team topped Oberlin College 5-4 in an back-and-forth thriller on Saturday at John P. Papp Stadium.

Oberlin (0-10, 0-8 North Coast Athletic Conference) controlled the pace early and pressed deep into Wooster's  (5-6, 3-3 NCAC) end, but the Fighting Scots' backs warded off a pair of close calls with sophomore Katie Padavick and junior Emma Roderick coming through with key defensive saves before Amelia Huang took a ball into the circle and scored the game's first goal in the seventh minute.

Wooster charged right back and struck quickly with the equalizer coming 1:09 later when sophomore Rose Taylor scored her first goal of the season, tipping in a feed that was sent on-cage from senior Rachel Wetzel.

Wooster took the lead for the first time of the afternoon in the 12th minute thanks to senior Leah Prescott's fifth tally of the year. On that play, the forward redirected a feed from junior Lauren Abbott into the cage.

Oberlin knotted the score up at two with just under 15 minutes left in the first half when Maureen Coffey blistered a one-timer into the cage off of a penalty corner feed from Huang.

Wooster, again answered Oberlin's goal quickly, this time needing 2:16 to push the lead back to two. Senior Kerry O'Connor gave Wooster that 3-2 advantage finishing an across-the-field feed from sophomore Maeven Barry for her sixth goal of the year.

Oberlin knotted the score at three with about 4:30 left in the first half with Huang sneaking back into the nearside of the cage on a penalty corner to redirect a pass from Ariana Enzerink.

Wetzel pushed Wooster back on top 4-3 just 2:35 into the second half with her third goal of the year, but Coffey countered with her second goal of the afternoon with just over 11 minutes remaining blocking a Wooster clear attempt and then beating the Scots' 'keeper in a one-on-one situation.

Wooster outshot Oberlin on the afternoon 32-13.

Freshman Madi Thomas finished with two saves on the afternoon, while picking up her first career win in goal.

Notable, this is the second year in a row the teams' first meeting of the year was won by Wooster 5-4 in overtime. Last year, Wetzel scored the game winner with :29 remaining in the first overtime stanza.

Saturday also marked the first time five different Scots scored in a game since seven student-athletes found the scoring column in a 9-1 win against Bethany College (W.Va.) on Oct. 28, 2012.

Next, Wooster travels to Denison University (8-3, 5-2 NCAC) for a 4:30 p.m. clash on Wednesday.
