Wooster's Offense Held In Check as Kenyon Tops Scots 4-1

Rose Taylor

Down two goals midway through the first half, The College of Wooster field hockey team fought back to within one, but a second-half shutout from Kenyon College lifted the Ladies to a 4-1 win over the Fighting Scots on Saturday afternoon at Gambier, Ohio.

An unassisted strike from Weezie Foster gave the Ladies (9-4, 7-2 North Coast Athletic Conference) a lead in the 10th minute.

Katelyn Hutchinson made it a 2-0 Kenyon advantage with a solo effort in the 21st minute, as the junior converted from close range after receiving a crossing pass off a penalty corner.

Just over two minutes later, sophomore Rose Taylor got the Scots (5-8, 3-5 NCAC) on the board with a redirection off a shot attempt from first-year Harriet Sudduth. The tally marked Taylor's second goal of the season and Sudduth's first career collegiate point.

Wooster nearly equalized in the 26th minute, as senior Leah Prescott sent in a corner to senior Rachel Wetzel, who fired on cage from up close, but Kenyon goalkeeper Sarah Speroff did well to deny the opportunity.

The Ladies outshot the Scots 16-7 in the first half.

Kenyon regained its two-goal advantage in the 38th minute as Hutchinson facilitated a give-and-go exchange in the circle with Foster, who put away her second goal of the game to give the Ladies a 3-1 lead.

Foster would make it a hat-trick in the 54th minute, as teammate Shannon Hart, who corralled a pass from the corner, dished from the top of the circle to Foster on the left side as she connected on the shot to push Kenyon's lead to 4-1.

Wetzel paced the Scots with four shots on the day, followed by three from Prescott.

The Ladies outshot the Scots 25-16 on the afternoon, while edging out the corner tally 9-8.

Wooster goalkeeper Lida LeVine finished with nine saves.

The Scots are back in action on Friday as they travel to Earlham College (5-8, 2-6 NCAC) for a 4:30 p.m. game.
