WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster's defense warded off a trio of penalty corners at the end of regulation, and then the Fighting Scots offense capitalized on a penalty corner at the other end of the field for the golden-goal in overtime as the Black and Gold kicked off the North Coast Athletic Conference slate with a 1-0 win over visiting Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster (2-0, 1-0 NCAC) finished off an impressive effort in the 79th-minute when senior Lauren Abbott pushed out a perfect feed on the Scots' penalty corner try to sophomore Harriet Sudduth, who buried the game-winner for her first collegiate goal.

At the end of regulation, Ohio Wesleyan (1-1, 0-1 NCAC) recorded a trio of penalty corners, the last of which resulted in a shot by Gabi Coty that was turned away by first-year Katie Shideler, and eventually cleared out by Wooster's defensive unit.

The majority of the contest featured primarily a defensive-minded battle for possession with offensive threats few and far between, but that really ramped up over the final eight minutes of regulation as both teams were able to fire off some quality shots. That's when Shideler recorded five of her eight saves on the afternoon, while offensively, Wooster had two key chances just before Ohio Wesleyan's trio of penalty corners, but the Battling Bishop's back line blocked a shot off the stick of junior Rose Taylor, and one by classmate Erika Womack sailed wide.

Despite the limited prime offensive opportunities, first-year Sammi Pavlecic broke free from the Bishop's defense 11 minutes into the contest for a one-on-one with the 'keeper, with Ohio Wesleyan's Alycia Goings turning aside the breakaway.

For the game, both teams finished even in the shot column at 15, and the totals were relatively even between both squads in each stanza.

Next, Wooster heads out on the road for a pair of matches this weekend at Centre College. The Scots open the trip against the host Colonels (1-1) at noon on Saturday.
