Wittenberg Knocks Wooster From Unbeaten Ranks in League Action

Rose Taylor

The College of Wooster field hockey team was tripped up in North Coast Athletic Conference play for the first time this season at host Wittenberg University topped the Fighting Scots 3-0 in a defensive-minded contest on Saturday afternoon at Springfield, Ohio.

Wittenberg's (4-1, 2-0 NCAC) Audrey Coler tucked in the first goal of the contest in the 12th-minute, in a game where offensive opportunities were few and far between as the contest featured nine total shots.

About 10 minutes after the goal, first-year Kristina Miesel – Wednesday's offensive hero in Wooster's (4-2, 2-1 NCAC) 1-0 double overtime win over Denison University – sent a penalty corner out towards the top of the circle, but Wittenberg's defense scrambled out in time to ward off the prime offensive chance.

In the second half, it was Wooster's defensive penalty corner unit's turn to shine as the Scots warded off a quartet in the first 10 minutes of the period, and only yielded a single shot in the process that sailed wide.

However, Coler continued to shine, with her second goal of the contest in the 49th minute, and Riley Trexler added an insurance goal six minutes later.

Wooster first-year Katie Shideler recorded the lone save of the contest.

Wooster has a quick turnaround as the Scots get right back at it with an 11 a.m. contest at Transylvania University (2-4) at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
