Katie Shideler

Sophomore Katie Shideler recorded a season-high 16 saves, and The College of Wooster generated enough offense to hold off host Earlham College for a 2-1 victory on Saturday morning at Richmond, Ind.

Wooster (7-1, 3-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) struck first on a penalty corner in the 18th minute. First-year Eleanor Sudduth inserted to senior Erika Womack at the top of the circle, and sophomore Sydney Schuster redirected Womack's shot attempt into the cage for her NCAC-leading 11th goal of the season.

Earlham (3-5, 0-4 NCAC) threatened on numerous occasions over the final 12 minutes and change of the first half, but to Wooster's credit, the Scots defense kept its slate clean, and that's when Shideler recorded four of her saves.

Shideler was kept busy at the onset of the second half, as Earlham was awarded a penalty corner one minute into the stanza. Shideler turned aside two more shots soon after, and senior Katie Padavick chipped in with a defensive save in the 45th minute.

Sticking with the defense, Wooster was tested often between the 51st and 56th minutes, and the Scots warded off five penalty corner attempts with Shideler turning aside three Quaker shot attempts.

Wooster's other goal in the contest also came on a penalty corner. In the 63rd minute, first-year Katie Agatucci's redirect was turned aside by Earlham 'keeper Margaret Murphy, but the Scots' rookie put home the rebound.

Earlham answered quickly with an Isabelle Bishop strike with 5:03 remaining.

The Quakers had a pair of penalty corners in the final two minutes, and Shideler turned aside Maite Turlings' attempt at a game-tying score.

Earlham outshot Wooster 25-10 and finished with a 17-5 edge in penalty corners.

Wooster's two-game Indiana swing concludes with a noon tilt at DePauw University (2-4, 2-2 NCAC) on Sunday, Sept. 23.
