Sophomore Mary Johnson's playmaking abilities as part of The College of Wooster field hockey team's penalty corner unit resulted in a second North Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week honor this fall. Johnson was announced as the NCAC's Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday for games played October 16-22.
Johnson had a four-goal week, which included three goals in Saturday's 5-1 win over Transylvania University. The back came up on an early corner and deflected in a ball played in from senior Maddie Peek in the game's fifth minute. Johnson doubled the individual scoring count early in the second period of the rout to make it a 4-0 game. Later, Johnson cleaned up a ball that was not possessed by either team in front of the goal, with that score upping Wooster's lead to 5-0.
Deflections is where Johnson again excelled in Sunday's 2-0 win over archrival Wittenberg University. Johnson deflected in a feed from senior Delaney Gross for the game's first goal in the second period.
Johnson's nine goals are tied for the team lead.
Wooster (9-3, 6-3 NCAC) plays at Ohio Wesleyan University (14-0, 8-0 NCAC) on Saturday, October 28 at 12 p.m. Wooster needs a win, plus a Wittenberg (9-7, 4-5 NCAC) win over Kenyon College (10-6, 6-3 NCAC) to make next week's four-team NCAC Tournament.
