Franks Great Lakes Player of the Year, Wickliffe Also Honored

2009-10 D3hoops.com All-Great Lakes Team

<a href= Ian Franks and Bryan Wickliffe, a pair of juniors at The College of Wooster, were both honored on the D3hoops.com All-Great Lakes Region Team, as Franks was voted the Player of the Year along with being part of the five-member first-team and Wickliffe earned a third-team spot, the popular Web site announced on Tuesday.

Franks, a 6-4 combo guard, becomes the third Fighting Scot selected as the region's top player over the five-year history of the D3hoops.com award, with former standouts James Cooper (2007-08) and Tom Port (2006-07) being the others. This season, Franks' averages of 17.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.3 assists helped lead the team to both the North Coast Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships. His scoring, which ended up as the seventh-highest total for a season in the tradition-rich program's history (555 points), came in a very efficient manner, making 52.4 percent of his field goals, 40.9 percent from 3-point range, and 77.3 percent at the free throw line. Previously named the NCAC Player of the Year, Franks was the only one in the league to rank among the top-seven in each of the shooting categories. Also of note, his 143 free throws made were the fifth-most ever at Wooster.

Brian Wickliffe Wickliffe, at 6-5 and 215 pounds, served as the Scots' primary presence in the post. The first-time all-region performer put up 11.2 points and 7.2 boards a night, while also excelling defensively. His scoring and rebounding numbers were both career highs, as were his field-goal percentage (.607) and free throw percentage (.731). Wickliffe played particularly well during Wooster's last 13 games, averaging 13.2 points and 8.2 rebounds while notching five double-doubles.

Franks, Wickliffe, and the rest of the Scots advanced two rounds in the NCAA Div. III Championships before falling in the sectional semifinals ("Sweet 16") and finishing 25-6 overall. Wooster was crowned NCAC champs via a 15-1 league record and then swept through the NCAC Tournament, capped by an 88-77 victory over arch-rival Wittenberg University.

The D3hoops.com all-region teams are voted on by each region's sports information directors.
