WOOSTER, Ohio – A Cody Barnes' jump shot from just inside the 3-point arc bounced off the rim three times, then through the hoop as the buzzer sounded to give Adrian College a 57-56 victory over The College of Wooster in the championship game of the 19th annual Al Van Wie/Rotary Classic at Timken Gymnasium Saturday night.

On the previous possession, Josh Claytor had given Wooster (1-1) a 56-55 lead, dropping in a short jump hook with 9.2 seconds left.

After a couple of timeouts, Darryl Flemister sprinted up the right side of the floor and was cut off on his way to the basket, picking up his dribble and passing back to Barnes at the right wing. Barnes quickly got the shot off, as he tossed up a high-arcing, 20-footer that eventually settled in for the game-winner.

Adrian (1-1) led for the majority of the opening half, including by as much as seven points at 18-11 and 23-16. Just a bit later with the score 25-19, the Fighting Scots went to account for the last eight points to take a 27-25 advantage into the break.

The second half was a back-and-forth affair until Wooster broke a 39-39 tie at the 8:44 mark via a personal 9-0 scoring run from DeVaughn Wingard.

The Bulldogs withstood the run, and eventually pulled back ahead, 53-52, on two Sean Gallant free throws with 1:27 remaining.

Evan Pannell got to the foul line on the ensuing possession and connected on both to give the Scots back the lead (54-53).

Next, Wooster made a defensive stop as Adrian misfired on a pair of long jumpers, with Xavier Brown collecting the defensive rebound as the clock ticked down. However, the Scots followed with a key mistake as they attempted to get a transition basket, and the ball quickly went back to the Bulldogs, who were the ones that ended up with a fast-break lay-up from Flemister with :23 to go.

When Claytor made his basket, it appeared Wooster might escape with the victory, but Barnes wound up the hero.

Both defenses played well, as the Scots shot just 32.7 percent from the field (18-for-55) and Adrian was just a tad better at 38.2 percent (21-for-55). The Bulldogs won the battle of the boards, 43-37, and Wooster's free throw shooting also contributed to the setback as it hit an even 60 percent (15-for-25).

Eric Lewis led all scorers with 26 points on 11-of-17 field goals en route to tournament MVP honors, while Barnes's game-winner gave him 13 markers in the scorebook.

Brown received defensive MVP recognition. He tallied a balanced stat line of 11 points, four rebounds, three assists, and five steals. Claytor posted 14 points for the second night in a row, garnering a spot on the all-tournament team, while Wingard finished with an even dozen.

Earlier at Timken Gymnasium, Otterbein University got past Carnegie Mellon University 75-58 during the consolation game. Otterbein's Zach Bakenhaster recorded a double-double of 15 points and 10 boards and teammate Colin Echelberry took an all-tourney team spot by reaching double figures in scoring for the second time with 12 points, while the Tartans were represented by Andre Moore, who registered 22 points, six rebounds, three assists, and four steals in the consolation.

The Scots will look to get back on the winning track Tuesday night at Baldwin Wallace University (1-0).
