Mays’s 21 Rebounds Stand Out in 81-67 Win Over JCU

While overshadowed by Jake Mays's stat line, Kenny DeBoer also played very well with 12 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two blocks.

WOOSTER, Ohio – Jake Mays became the first College of Wooster men's basketball player with a 20-rebound game in 24 seasons, leading the No. 13 ranked Fighting Scots past John Carroll University, 81-67, during Friday night's second game of the 50th annual E.M. "Mose" Hole/Kiwanis Classic at Timken Gymnasium.

Marietta College dominated Geneva College, 92-50, in the opener, and via pre-determined match-ups, Wooster (9-2) will play host to Marietta (8-2) Saturday at 7 p.m., for an intriguing game between two teams with just two losses each.

Mays's 21 rebounds were the most by a Scot player since Mike Trimmer had 22 at Bethany College back on Jan. 9, 1989, and Mays also registered a career high with five blocked shots and his third double-double of the season with 11 points.

Wooster was ahead for the last 14 minutes of the first half, including 36-31 at the break, and the entire second half, but could not put away John Carroll (5-5), which features a constant high-pressure style of play, until late.

The Blue Streaks made it a five-point game at 65-60 with 5:00 remaining, then the Scots answered with a pair of Kenny DeBoer free throws, followed on their next series by a Doug Thorpe lay-up, assisted by DeBoer, and then a Josh Claytor lay-up for an 11-point cushion (71-60).

Wooster remained ahead by at least eight points the rest of the way, eventually securing the 14-point win.

When the Scots were able to break John Carroll's typical full-court trapping defense (they did commit 20 turnovers), it resulted in a number of easy baskets as they finished shooting 54.4 percent from the field (31-for-57) and with 44 of their points coming in the paint.

Wooster's defense helped limit the Blue Streaks to under 40 percent from the floor (.365; 23-for-63), and the hosts controlled the boards with a 46-29 advantage.

Mays wasn't the only Scot with a double-double as Claytor converted 7-of-9 field goals for 15 points to go with 10 rebounds. It marked Claytor's third career double-double, first of this season.

DeBoer also had a productive game with 12 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two blocks, while in the backcourt, Xavier Brown scored a game-high 18 points and Thorpe gave Wooster a fifth player in double figures with 14 points.

Kyle Hubbard and Danny Wallack tallied 13 points apiece for John Carroll.

Marietta completely outmatched Geneva (1-9), putting together a wire-to-wire victory that featured a 44-22 halftime cushion and final 42-point triumph. The Pioneers' Scott Kimmey tossed in 17 points, J.J. Martin 12, and Wayne County product Brennan McKean 11 in his return to Timken Gym.

Geneva will play John Carroll at 2 p.m. Saturday.
