WOOSTER, Ohio – Doug Thorpe scored 10 points during a late four-possession stretch, propelling No. 15 ranked College of Wooster to a 68-58 victory against DePauw University Saturday afternoon at Timken Gymnasium in the first of the North Coast Athletic Conference foes' regular season meetings.

DePauw (9-6, 2-4 NCAC) did not take its first lead of the game until Michael Wilkinson's 3-pointer made it 51-48 at the 5:50 mark of the second half.

Wooster (12-2, 6-0 NCAC) quickly regained the advantage. Following a timeout, Jake Mays laid in an offensive rebound, and after a turnover by the Tigers, Kenny DeBoer got free on the inside for a lay-up and a 52-51 Fighting Scots' lead.

After DePauw's Barry Flynn split a pair of free throws to even the score, Thorpe took over. First, the junior guard assisted another DeBoer lay-up, and on the next four trips down the floor, he hit a deep 3-pointer from left of the key, drove to the basket for two lay-ups, and added another 3-pointer that virtually sealed the outcome as it put Wooster up 64-56 with :51 remaining.

The Scots had opened the game on a 9-0 run and later led by as much as 14 (26-12). Just a bit later, though, they would hit a cold offensive stretch, not scoring a field goal during the last seven-plus minutes of the half. Fortunately, Wooster's defense kept the Tigers off the scoreboard for most of that stretch, too, as the hosts still owned a 33-21 edge at the break.

DePauw's second half comeback was fueled by a 7-0 run and a 10-0 run, first trimming a 38-24 margin to 38-31 and then turning a 48-41 deficit into what turned out to be a short-lived lead.

Statistically, the Scots shot just a little bit better from the field, 40.7 percent (22-for-54) to 35.0 percent (21-for-60), and outrebounded the Tigers by 10 (44-34).

Thorpe's strong finish was a bit unlikely considering he started the day 2-for-11 from the field. He ended up with a game-high 17 points, though, and also tallied six rebounds and three assists.

DeBoer continued his solid play of late, producing a 14-point, eight-rebound line, while Josh Claytor added 10 points, eight boards, and three assists. Also of note, Evan Pannell had three blocked shots, all during the first half, to go with nine points.

Flynn and Wilkinson combined for 25 of DePauw's 37 second-half points, and tallied 16 and 12, respectively, for the game.

On Wednesday, Wooster will host Allegheny College (8-7, 2-4 NCAC), which led NCAC co-leader Ohio Wesleyan University 31-27 at the half before losing 79-73 on Saturday, at 7:30 p.m.
