WOOSTER, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan University strung together an 18-2 run during the latter stages of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament championship game, keying the No. 2 seed's 76-66 win over top-seeded College of Wooster Saturday night at Timken Gymnasium.

Ohio Wesleyan (22-5) receives the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Div. III Championship field, while Wooster (23-5) is hoping for an at-large bid after seeing its 11-game winning streak against the Battling Bishops come to an end.

The Fighting Scots went ahead 53-50 with 8:43 to play, as Doug Thorpe sunk three free throws, however, they would score just two points over the next six-plus minutes.

The most significant part of the run may have been when Andy Winters dropped in 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions, giving the visitors a seven-point lead (60-53) at the 4:34 mark.

Following a timeout, Wooster's Evan Pannell worked his way to the free throw line and made both to pull within 60-55.

Then, Marshall Morris, who had made just 10 3-pointers all season entering the game, hit his fourth of the game for an eight-point cushion (63-55).

The Scots misfired on their next two offensive sets, with the second followed by a Reuel Rogers' three-point play. Rogers added a couple more free throws with 2:02 remaining to make it 68-55 before Pannell finally halted the run on a runner in the paint, but it was too late as Wooster never got the margin back under double figures.

During a defensive-oriented first half, the Scots led by as many as seven (18-11), only to see the Bishops add an 8-0 run shortly thereafter. Eventually, Wooster took a slight 30-29 edge into halftime.

The biggest statistical difference in the game was 3-point shooting. Ohio Wesleyan made 9-of-20 (.450), compared to the Scots' 2-of-17 (.118), their second-lowest percentage of the season in that area.

Winters was the tournament MVP, recording 17 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and four steals in the championship game. Morris picked up all-tournament team recognition after leading his squad with 19 points, highlighted by the 4-of-5 3-point shooting.

Thorpe went for a game-high 24 points, plus five assists, and he was joined on the all-tourney team by Pannell, who contributed 11 points a night after going for a career-high 21.

Josh Claytor also played well in defeat, tallying his second double-double of the season via 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

The NCAA will announce the field for the 2013 Div. III national tournament on Monday at 12:30 p.m., via ncaa.com.
