Scott Purcell eyes up one of his five 3-pointers on the night. The senior scored a career-high 15 points in Wooster's decisive victory.

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster outscored Thiel College 28-5 at the outset of the teams' match-up in the 51st annual "Mose" Hole/Kiwanis Classic Sunday night, and the No. 2 ranked Fighting Scots eventually finished off the Tomcats by an 88-53 count at Timken Gymnasium. Earlier, Illinois College upended Hanover College 88-81.

Wooster (9-1) scored the opening 13 points, with 3-pointers coming from Doug Thorpe, Scott Purcell, and Kenny DeBoer. The run was briefly interrupted before the Scots tallied nine more unanswered for a 22-2 lead, and at the 10-minute mark, they were ahead by the aforementioned 28-5.

It was still a 20-point margin entering the last four minutes of the first half at 36-16 when Thiel (3-4) rallied. The Tomcats put together an 8-0 stretch before Purcell hit a 3-pointer for a 39-24 halftime score.

Thiel chipped it down to a 12-point margin again early in the second half (41-29), then Dan Fanelly converted a three-point play and Purcell netted another 3-pointer for a 47-29 cushion with just under 16:00 left, and the Tomcats never truly threatened again.

Wooster stretched the lead back into the 20s about four minutes later, and later to 35 (74-39), which would be the final margin.

Team statistics of note included the Scots making a season-high 14 3-pointers, attempting 33 for a rate of .424, and a plus-20 rebounding margin, also a best this year.

Junior guard Xavier Brown notched the second double-double of his career with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Purcell's 5-of-6 night from outside resulted in a career-best 15 points.

Also in double figures were Josh Kipfer and DeBoer with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Kipfer was one rebound shy of a double-double. Notable, Thorpe issued a career-high six assists.

For Thiel, Charlie Thomas notched 15 points.

Illinois College, coached by former Wooster assistant Mike Worrell, received a very strong outing from Brandon Berry to get past Hanover. Berry made 10-of-12 field goals (4-of-6 3-pointers) and 11-of-12 free throws for 35 points and controlled 11 rebounds.

This year's version of the "Mose" Hole Classic has pre-determined match-ups, thus Wooster will face Hanover on Monday at 7 p.m., with Illinois College and Thiel preceding them at 5 p.m.
