No. 5 Wooster Upended Late by No. 17 OWU

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster put up two potential game-winning 3-pointers in the final moments, but they were both off the mark as No. 17 Ohio Wesleyan University completed a 62-60 comeback win over the fifth-ranked Fighting Scots inside Timken Gymnasium Wednesday night.

With that result, there is now a four-way tie at the top of the North Coast Athletic Conference, with Wooster (15-3, 9-2 NCAC) and Ohio Wesleyan (15-3, 9-2 NCAC) as well as DePauw University and Wittenberg University all at 9-2 in league play.

The Scots uncharacteristically gave up a 10-point lead. A Xavier Brown 3-pointer made it 57-47 with a little more than six minutes to play, but Dre White answered with the first of a series of key plays, as he hit one from outside and after a Wooster turnover he followed his own miss with a put-back basket (57-52).

Next, Reuel Rogers went to work on the inside for the Battling Bishops, scoring on back-to-back offensive series to pull the visitors within 57-56.

The Scots appeared to regain the momentum when Brown drained another 3-pointer, assisted by Doug Thorpe, to go in front by four points, however, White quickly responded by banking one in from behind the arc to make it a 60-59 margin with 2:30 to play.

Wooster still held on to the lead entering the final minute, thanks to a couple of defensive stops, but continued to come up empty on the offensive end. With :45 left, Rogers converted again, this time hitting a runner while he was fouled, then making the free throw to give Ohio Wesleyan its first lead, 62-60, since the 14:00 mark of the first half.

That score would hold up as the final, despite two more possessions for the Scots. First, a 3-point shot was blocked, but Wooster got one more chance when the Bishops missed the front end of a one-and-one with :21 remaining.

Xavier Brown, Dan Fanelly
Xavier Brown kept Wooster's chances alive with this offensive rebound, but a final 3-pointer was off target as the Scots took their first home loss of the season.

As the clock ticked down under :10, the Scots found Scott Purcell open in the left corner. His 3-ball was long off the side rim, Brown kept the play alive with an offensive rebound, and threw it out to Thorpe, positioned just left of the top of the key, but his hurried shot was off to the left.

Wooster had led nearly the entire game, with an 11-2 run midway through the opening half opening up a 28-18 advantage. The Scots were ahead 34-27 at halftime.

In the second, the Bishops evened the score at 41, then Wooster responded with an 11-2 run (52-43), and shortly thereafter it was 57-47 when Ohio Wesleyan started its closing 15-3 stretch.

The game was very even statistically, with the Bishops shooting just a bit better, 41.5 percent from the field (22-for-53) to 36.5 percent (19-for-52).

Thorpe notched his third consecutive 20-point game with 21, while Kenny DeBoer was very active for the Scots with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Rogers was the biggest difference in the game with 21 points, including 9-of-13 field-goal shooting, and 13 rebounds.

Wooster will attempt to bounce back on Saturday when it hosts Wabash College (5-12, 4-7 NCAC) at 2 p.m.
