NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Series: Matt Schlingman '05

Matt Schlingman

We're catching up with some of our NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients to see what they have been up to since graduating from The College of Wooster. Our seventh Fighting Scot in this series is Matt Schlingman '05, a mathematics alumnus. Schlingman is part of the strategic finance department with Cardinal Health's Nuclear and Precision Health Solutions' business unit in Dublin, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus.

Q: Tell us a bit about your career path since you graduated from The College of Wooster?

A: After graduating from Wooster, I worked at Progressive Insurance in the Cleveland area for four years prior to attending Ohio State University's Fisher College of Business' full-time MBA program. Since 2011, I have worked at Cardinal Health supporting various businesses in finance, pricing, and analytics.

Q: Walk us through some of the key duties at your current job?

A: I currently support Cardinal Health's Nuclear and Precision Health Solutions' business unit, which operates the nation's largest network of nuclear pharmacies and manufacturing facilities supplying healthcare providers across the country with radioactive drugs used in procedures such as cardiac stress tests, positron emission tomography (PET) scans, and cancer treatments. My primary responsibilities involve financial due diligence in support of our strategy and business development initiatives as we evaluate the pipeline of products under development and pursue partnerships to manufacture and distribute the next generation of radiopharmaceuticals.

Q: Tell us about any super-cool & unique experiences you've been a part of at your current job, or at a previous job?

A: What I enjoy most about my current role is working with an extremely talented and diverse group of business leaders, pharmacists, and doctors to evaluate new potential breakthrough technologies and develop strategies that use our unique capabilities to create value for our customers and their patients.

Q: Tell us about one or two professors or campus resources/organizations who really helped shape your career path and set you up for a high level of success after Wooster?

A: Steve Moore and the men's basketball coaching staff were a tremendous influence and pushed me to achieve goals on and off the court while imparting many life lessons still relevant in the professional setting. My professors in the math department at Wooster were outstanding as well. They're excellent teachers who spent the time to explain complex subjects, answer questions, and be accessible to students.

Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?

A: I grew up about 30 minutes away and attended several basketball camps at Wooster (Camp Fighting Scot) in high school, so the basketball program and coaches played a major role in my decision and were my first exposure to the College. As I learned more about the academic programs and reputation, I realized Wooster offered the best combination of academic and athletic opportunities for me.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories about your time as a student-athlete at Wooster?

A: Our tournament run to the "Final Four" in 2003 certainly stands out, but I was very fortunate to be part of successful teams and a winning culture throughout my time at Wooster. Our teams were incredibly close-knit and had a ton of fun both on and off the court and we formed lifelong friendships in the process.

Q: Who were some of the key influencers or what were some of the key resources you utilized as a student-athlete that helped you balance out being a student and a highly-decorated athlete at the College?

A: One great thing about Wooster is that I never felt as though there was tension between my academics and athletics. Coach Steve Moore and his staff prioritized academics and took an active interest in our success in the classroom. At the same time, many of my professors in the math department, such as John Ramsay, Jim Hartman, and Charles Hampton, frequently attended basketball games and supported athletics. So, I always felt supported and encouraged as both a student and an athlete.

Q: What did it mean to help put Wooster in the national spotlight as a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient?

A: It was certainly an honor to receive a scholarship! I believe there were only a handful of basketball players across all divisions awarded a scholarship that year, and I'm sure there were many more who were deserving. I think it's a testament to Wooster's reputation for academic excellence and the decades of success in the men's basketball program that I was even considered.

Q: Talk about how you utilized your NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship funds?

A: I attended the Fisher College of Business at Ohio State University for an MBA degree.
