Denison University found its shooting groove, and that proved to be too much for The College of Wooster men's basketball team to overcome, as the Fighting Scots fell 92-76 in the return trip on Saturday afternoon at Livingston Gymnasium.
Wooster (2-3), which held Denison (4-3) to a 36.1 percent clip from the floor during Friday's 72-59 win over the Big Red, had tough sledding in both halves when it came to trying to contain the opposition's efficiency. Denison opened with a 64.3 percent (18-of-28) mark in the first half and cooled off slightly to 57.7 percent (15-of-26) in the second half.
Freshman Mitchell Heilman scored 10 points in the second half. |
Denison nearly ran away with Saturday's contest less than five minutes into the second half when Spencer Patenaude's driving layup pushed the Big Red's lead to 55-39 with 15:47 remaining. Freshman Mitchell Heilman, who scored 10 second-half points, stepped up and trimmed Denison's lead to 10 with 14:40 remaining, and classmate Carter Warstler canned a three-pointer on the next possession, which cut the Big Red's advantage to 57-48.
Later, freshman Elijah Meredith's signature hook shot fell, and that made it a 63-54 game with 11:52 left. The Scots were within seven at 77-70 with 4:26 remaining, courtesy of Heilman's three pointer.
Junior JG Gillard staked Wooster to an early 2-0 lead at the charity stripe, and sophomore Tayler McNeal's driving layup gave the Scots a slight edge at 9-7. Patenaude, who scored 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting off the bench, got his hook shot to fall at the 14:16 mark. That bumped Denison's lead to 11-9, and the Big Red remained in front for the duration.
McNeal's 17 points led a quartet of Scots in double figures. He went 6-of-12 from the field and added three rebounds. Styers, who went 6-of-6 at the free throw line - and is now a perfect 17-or-17 on the season - added 13 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Junior Najee Hardaway had a balanced afternoon with 11 points, six rebounds, and four assists, while Heilman rounded out the Scots in double figures with 10.
Wooster shot 44.8 percent (26-of-58), was 9-of-28 from three-point range, and went 15-of-23 at the charity stripe.

Denison shot 33-of-54 from the floor and was spot on at the charity stripe with an 18-of-20 afternoon. Denison won the rebounding battle 30-27, after coming up three short from Wooster's total on Friday night.
