125th Wooster-Wittenberg Game This Saturday; Look Back at the Rivalry's History

James Cooper, Wooster Basketball The 125th game between The College of Wooster men's basketball team and archrival Wittenberg University is on tap for 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 14 at Wittenberg's Pam Evans Smith Arena. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for those 18 and under and 65 and older. You can purchase tickets online here.

The Wooster-Wittenberg rivalry is one of the best in small college basketball. The teams rank first and second all-time in NCAA Div. III wins at 1,833 (Wittenberg) and 1,795 (Wooster), respectively. Wooster holds a 64-60 lead in the rivalry, which features 49 games that have been decided by five points or less, including 16 of the last 39 and 29 of the last 67, and those numbers do not even include the classic triple-overtime game on February 12, 2005, won by Wooster 102-95.

Wooster holds a 42-35 lead in the rivalry since Wittenberg joined the North Coast Athletic Conference, and the average margin of victory is just 8.5 points in that 77-game span. Either Wooster or Wittenberg have won or shared the NCAC regular season championship every season but three since 1989-1990, and they have combined to win all but six NCAC Tournament title games since the Tigers joined the conference.

Both programs are currently led by former rivals, as Wittenberg head coach Matt Croci and Wooster head coach Doug Cline are 1994 and 1995 alumni of their respective institutions. They squared off seven times during their standout careers, with Croci's squads holding a 4-3 advantage. Cline's 1992 team won the NCAC Tournament championship game over Wittenberg.
