Rodney Mitchell

  • Title:
    Asst. Coach

Rodney Mitchell, a fan favorite during his playing days, rejoined The College of Wooster’s men’s basketball coaching staff prior to the 2020-21 season. Mitchell was previously on the College’s staff during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons, where he helped guide the Fighting Scots to a pair of North Coast Athletic Conference titles and a 53-7 record.

As a standout for the Scots, Mitchell’s career spanned from being a late-game substitution to earning a spot in the regular rotation as a freshman and then developing into one of the best guards in team history. Mitchell used all of his 5-10, 160-pound frame to compile 1,080 points, including 130 three-pointers, 420 rebounds, 321 assists, and 129 steals during 116 games played. He graduated as Wooster’s 18th-leading scorer and was just the third Scot under six feet tall to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Wooster posted a remarkable 101-18 record (.849) during Mitchell’s playing days, and he helped the team to its first appearance in the NCAA Div. III “Final Four” as a junior.

Mitchell’s senior season (2003-04) saw him average 13.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 3.4 assists en route to earning first-team all-conference and first-team all-region honors.

Mitchell’s coaching experience includes a stint (2007-09) as the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Akron-Wayne College, several years as a volunteer youth basketball coach in the Wooster area, and he’s been a basketball trainer for over a decade.

Professionally, the Elida, Ohio, native, who holds a degree in history from Wooster, is employed by the Wayne Metropolitan Housing Authority. There, he’s served as the director of occupancy since 2008.
