Wooster Among Top Half of Field at Own Nye Intercollegiate

T.J. Selby follows through during his round Friday at the Wooster Country Club.

The College of Wooster men's golfers finished among the top half of their annual Nye Intercollegiate, tying for fifth-place in the competitive 12-team field, despite not executing as well as they hoped on their home course, the Wooster Country Club in Wooster, Ohio, Friday and Saturday.

The Fighting Scots were within striking distance of a top-three finish after day one's 323 score, just six shots out of third-place and less than 10 shy of eventual champion Denison University. Denison edged out Allegheny College, among the "others receiving votes" in the latest NCAA Div. III top-25 coaches poll, by a single stroke 625 to 626.

Forced to count three individuals in the mid-80s, Wooster wound up with a 334 on Saturday and 657 total, tying with John Carroll University. The Scots did finish well ahead of four other teams from the Ohio Athletic Conference as well as their North Coast Athletic Conference brethren Wabash College (680).

Individually, junior T.J. Selby led the young Wooster team with a top-10 showing. He tied for 10th out of the 73 competitors, turning in similar scores of 80 and 79, highlighted by a front-nine 37 during Saturday's round with birdies on the par-four, 491-yard opening hole and the par-four, 385-yard ninth. Selby's first 18 included back-to-back birdies on the par-three, 177-yard 10th and par-five, 555-yard 11th holes.

The Scots' No. 1 player, sophomore Marcus Carano, fired a 78 on Friday with 12 pars, but followed with an uncharacteristic 85 the second 18 to tie for 19th-place (163). Also scoring both days was classmate Calvin Milligan as he turned in an 81 and 84, tying for 26th (165).

Freshmen Scott Sears and Michael Bay were Wooster's other starters and they produced very similar outings of 84-86 and 85-86, respectively.

The Scots also had the luxury of entering seven more as individual players, and two other rookies stood out in the form of Andrew Campbell and Jackson Groat. They each carded 85 over the first 18, then Campbell was in the 70s (79) on Saturday and Groat not far behind (82). Each finished among the top half of the field, Campbell tying for 23rd (164) and Groat in a 31st-place tie (167).

Head coach Rich Danch will have some tough decisions to make as he fills out his lineup for the first half of the North Coast Athletic Conference Golf Championship Series next weekend, 36 holes at Twin Bridges Golf Club in Danville, Ind.
